WEEKEND UPDATE

I saw "Flags of Our Fathers" yesterday. Very powerful, and deserving of bigger box office than it's getting so far this weekend (3rd). Very true to the book by James Bradley and in its depictions of the battle for Iwo Jima. Of course director Clint Eastwood can't resist some PC applications and spin (and there have been complaints about not enough African-Americans in the film.. there were 900 in the battles), but the personal stories and images are haunting and deeply moving. When Bradley's book was first released a few years ago he was a guest on my show, discussing why the "Greatest Generation" is so reticent in discussing their experiences in World War II. See the film.. and read the book. Well worth it.
NOTE: Yes, there were close to 900 African-Americans involved in taking Iwo Jima... that's out of 110,000 Marines. Here are more facts: http://www.iwojima.com/battle/battleb.htm
