WE'LL APOLOGIZE NOW

If this is offensive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsDfOTLWj5k But it is a funny medley of Sen. Larry Craig's denials. Whatever the full story, he pleaded guilty to lewd contact. He needs to get out of the way and not drag down the GOP.

DEJA VU

Seems like old times... funny money for Mrs. Clinton is being returned:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,295031,00.html What else is lurking out there? Of course the Dems will make a bigger deal about GOP scandals ala Larry Craig instead, hoping to deflect questions about money corruption.

HE DOTH PROTEST TOO MUCH?

Sen.Larry Craig's heated statement today ("not gay... never been gay") was strange on several counts. Yes, the Idaho newspaper-of-record has been hounding him on the issue for a long time, and Craig is allowed due process. But the story gets goofier the more you dig into it. Here's what has me most perplexed: Usually Republicans quit and get out of the way when there's a scandal, instead of playing it ala Bill Clinton until they have to drag 'em away. Maybe Larry Craig is at heart (gasp) a DEMOCRAT, the way he's hanging in and spewing denials. No matter what, the story is this year's Mark Foley blurb. Thank goodness there's no election day soon. The GOP ethics investigation announced today was timely (for a change).

SPEAKING OF DEMS: Rep. Bob Filner is still in Iraq, after reports of alleged airport scuffling in DC and and earlier similar story at a detention center in El Cantro, California. Bob was supposed to call in to my radio show from the war zone, but apparently that's not happening now. I guess he finds American media more dangerous than Al Qaeda.

MEANWHILE: Iran's wacky leader vows to "fill the vacuum" in Iraq. Gee, thanks for the "help". He's already helping bad guys there and in Syria, etc. So President Bush says the right thing: http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8RA6IS80&show_article=1 Just watch how the opposition tries to say this is Bush just making things up to increase his power. No, Ahmadinejad is nuts. And very dangerous.

SALUTING GOV. PETE WILSON

The controversial statue honoring former San Diego Mayor (and later U.S. Senator and California Governor) Pete Wilson was unveiled Saturday: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20070826-9999-1m26wilson.html
I was on-site, having emcee duties at the birthday party reception for Pete, following the ceremony. Yes, protestors tried to make their laughable case that the statue praises "hate" and "white supremacy", and they kept their noise level to the maximum. What I haven't seen in most stories in print and on TV is how rude they were, yelling and taunting non-stop at high decibels throughout the program, during the National Anthem, during every speaker's remarks. Rude and yes, hateful. They were screaming about a disagreement over Prop 187 some thirteen years ago. One Wilson friend told me that this made as much sense as their protesting something former Senator Alan Cranston did years ago. Most of the protestors weren't alive during Wilson's terms in San Diego, and they were riled up over a grand distortion of history by group organizers. The fact is that the new Horton Walk of Fame statue honors Pete Wilson for his work as San Diego mayor... work that revitalized the city and gave us so much that we enjoy today. It's an entirely appropriate salute (and one that is on private land, paid for by private donors).

WHAT HATH CLINTON UNLEASHED?

Ever since "it depends on what the meaning of is IS.." it seems like everyone opts for an "it's not really my fault" defense. Here's Michael Vick, now "modifying" his guilty plea:

TOILET TO TAP: Chula Vista, CA business park tenants have been drinking recycled potty water for two years. And the water district people are "trying to figure out what happened"... this after telling customers it was all fine. Gee, didn't SOMEONE think about taking a closer look oh, three months... six months into it? Two years? I can hear the attorneys lining up now.

KARL ROVE'S PLIGHT

Was it his choice to leave now, or was he pushed? We may never know for sure. But Karl Rove's a smart man, and he won't just go away (as much as the left would like to see that happen): http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0807/5354.html I always liked him and we had some fascinating visits on and off the air... but the recent push for illegal immigration amnesty left a sour taste for many fellow conservatives. Still, he'll be back.

MERV GRIFFIN, RIP

He passed away this weekend after a return bout with cancer: http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8QVIV803&show_article=1 Merv, Johnny Carson, Jack Paar all inspired me to get into this business... never missed their shows, even Griffin's various talkshows as they morphed in new ways in the 80s and 90s. He was one of my favorite in-studio guests, and he always stayed excited, upbeat, creative and entrepeneurial. I loved the way he was active doing new business activities up to the end. He was also a big supporter of Ronald Reagan (and Nancy) and the Reagan Library. He'll be missed... while many of his TV creations live on, TFN.

Not content with pushing a return to the "fairness doctrine", the left tries another way to muzzle conservatives... this time in San Francisco: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/staticarticles/article57096.html These are the same people (might be the same guy) who said we don't need a military, since local police could handle everything.

Here it is in all its glory: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/ken-shepherd/2007/08/09/couric-gaffe-cbs-anchor-puts-reporter-hoarse-voice-spot Katie shows her bias on the war effort and then tosses to David Martin at the Pentagon... who has no voice... and no one has told Katie.

WHAT THE HECK

Let's vote tomorrow and get over with it. The battle-between-the-states Ego Fest continues... to the point where the first votes in the 2008 Prez race may be cast THIS year: http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2007/08/08/2942 It's gotten crazier already, and it's not even Labor Day. Speaking of Labor, as the Democrat candidates (a few of 'em) pander to the gay lobby tonight, it's also fun to mull over their "we don't cave to special interests" claims from the last debate... and mere two night ago... in front of thousands of, well, special interests the the AFL-CIO event in Chicago. Who do they think they're fooling?

KUDOS TO COLONEL COLEMAN: It was announced today that longtime Padres announcer (and Yankee star, WW 2 and Korea hero) JERRY COLEMAN will be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame later this year. Congratulations to a very deserving recipient and longtime friend! We'll talk with Jerry on our radio show Friday, 5 to 9AM Pacific on the new San Diego 1700AM and www.sandiego1700.com

SAY IT AIN'T SO, JACK

On the upcoming season of "24" (one of my favorites... well, maybe until now) the story line is shifting to Washington, DC and ... global warming? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/02/AR2007080202057.html Ugh. TIME TO STOP SUPPORTING TERRORISTS

Too many members of the U.S. Congress could be aiding the bad guys via their investments. Time to divest, boys and girls: http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewPolitics.asp?Page=/Politics/archive/200708/POL20070802a.html

UNIONS ARE GREAT FOR COAL MINERS: But get in the way of just about everything else. Latest case involved the Gaylord development deal. It was a dead issue, then back for one more shot, only to be nixed by union bosses again. Nice way to get jobs for the rank and file... make sure no jobs will be created: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20070802-9999-1m2cvbay.html

TIME FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO GET FOCUSED: Skip warm and fuzzy restrictions on smoking, novelty lighters, etc and pay attention to the infrastructure. In light of the deadly bridge collapse in Minnesota, it's time to get real, folks. How safe are we? There are hundreds of bridgess and overpasses (many in Southern California) that are in bad shape, and it seems the chances of one falling on me are greater than second-hand smoke on a public sidewalk.
