BIG NEWS!

The Mark Larson Show returns to KCBQ 1170AM in San Diego beginning Monday June 1st. We'll be on 7-9AM weekdays! Very excited to return to the station we launched (in its current talk format) when I was GM there in 1999. After 18 years with KFMB, I moved to Salem Communications/San Diego (KCBQ/KPRZ) for over 10 years before shifting to KOGO in 2004. This is a wonderful opportunity to rejoin a company that champions conservative values. I hope you'll listen on-air or online (www.kcbq.com) ... and tell a friend! Thanks again for your continued support.

KUSI-TV AGAIN NEXT WEEK: I'll be back on San Diego's KUSI television (Channels 9 & 51) in my political analyst role next Wednesday May 27, 7:10AM. Watch for more frequent appearances as the new KCBQ rolls out. For video clips (including our Friday May 22 segment about Obama vs. Cheney) go to www.marklarson.com and click on "Media Archives".

REAGAN RANCH ROUNDTABLE: At the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, Friday June 5 (fifth anniversary of President Reagan's passing), sponsored by Young America's Foundation.  Yours truly will moderate a special luncheon featuring a variety of Reagan insiders including biographer Lou Cannon. We'll also broadcast the new KCBQ show there that morning. For tickets and info, go to www.ReaganRanch.org

NOW THE REAL WORK BEGINS

I'm proud to live in California where the voters actually paid attention to the fine print and voted down the latest parade of Propositions, saying no to tax-and-spend policies. The only Prop that passed was 1F, slappling bureaucrats with a penalty when times get even tougher. Time to go to zero-based budgeting and start over:

NICE TRY, BUT NO...

..."No" to all the California propositions on Tuesday's ballot. If you have to cave in on anything, then vote "Yes" only on Prop 1F (which keeps elected officials from making money in a budget jam).  Besides, there should already be a "rainy day fund" money from Props 57 and 58 a couple of years ago (fat chance). Politicians have to start budgeting like the rest of the real world does... make it zero-based and cut the stuff that doesn't matter. The latest plans have too many loopholes, too. Enough of the scare tactics to try to move voters to keep embracing tax increases. A couple of weeks ago, the people of Chula Vista wised up and defeated a sales tax increase. Time to wake up and realize what's up with the current crop of props.

SPEAKING OF SCARE TACTICS: Nice timing for a moderate quake tonight in So Cal (click on QUAKE TRACKER in the column at right for details). Betting that some pols will use seismic jitters to remind us how dumping the propositions on Tuesday will result in no police and fire safety...especially in times of horrible earthquakes. Uh huh.

KUDOS TO DONALD TRUMP...

... for standing by Miss California Carrie Prejean. Of course The Donald knows this will pump up big ratings for his pageants, but he showed America that he also supports free speech.  In making the decision, Trump showed respect for the millions who agree with the traditional marriage view while avoiding demonization of the other side (he even said he'd welcome Perez Hilton back as a judge). Carrie's comments at today's news conference were very appropriate, especially the point about "agreeing to disagree" when it comes to hot button issues. Both sides of political debates can learn something from the civility displayed through Trump and Prejean's articulation of this case. (He was also right when he told the assembled media, "you should be ashamed of yourselves".)

OBSERVATIONS ON THE HALF-SKULL

Yes, the President had some good lines at the White House Correspondents Dinner Saturday, but weren't some of them a bit too revealing? I get the feeling he's really believing more of what adoring "journalists" say about him. He really seems to think he's the answer to, well, everything..... At the same event, entertainer Wanda Sykes went overboard in attacking Limbaugh (while President Obama smiled in apparent agreement), making comparisons between Rush and Bin Ladin, citing treason- then hoping El Rushbo's "kidneys fail". Such a class act. Imagine the flap if a conservative leveled the same criticism.... Here in California the Santa Barbara fires are easing (thank God) and Sacramento bureaucrats are cranking up the last minute pre-election guilt campaign regarding the latest ballot Propositions (May 19 special election). You know they're worried about passage of the lame band-aid props when they trot out firefighters to tell Californians that fire (and police) will be gone and you're on you own.. unless you vote "our way" (aka "the union way")... In San Diego, hotel tycoon Doug Manchester is softening his pro-traditional marriage stance by caving into the gay lobbying groups that have boycotted his hotels. Why the boycott? Because he gave his own money, legally to support Prop 8 and traditional marriage in last fall's election. Now Manchester is trying to make a deal with the other side by offering the same amount he gave to pro-Prop 8 forces ($125,000 in cash and trade). Message to pro-traditional values voters: Give up. The word from the gay lobby to Manchester: It will never be enough... nice try. In wake of this, anyone who took a stand for one-man, one-woman marriage in the Golden State states to get even more demonization. Some who only gave $100 to the "yes on 8"stance have also had to withstand boycotts.

PAKISTAN IS THE KEY

The President needs to refocus priorities and insure that Pakistan doesn't spin out of control. If that happens, everything changes.

SAY WHAT? Hawaii's state Senate just OK'd an "Islam Day".  I wonder how "Christian Day" would go over...

JACK KEMP, RIP

We have lost a real treasure. Jack Kemp's passing tonight didn't come as a surprise to those who knew he was battling illness for some time, but it's still hard to believe he's really gone. Jack was a wonderful man, with a strong faith and great enthusiasm for the American dream. He had such amazing ideas and unbridled energy and passion for what he believed. Our country is better because he lived, and was very involved in politics... all the way to the end.  I got to know him over the years through various organizations we both supported, and at events I was honored to MC (such as all the Dole/Kemp campaign events in 1996 when Jack ran for VP).  He was one-of-a-kind.  Our prayers are with Joanne and the family. Thank God for Jack Kemp.

NOW IT BEGINS

The early retirement of Justice David Souter will afford Mr. Obama his first chance to pack the US Supreme Court, putting radical his stamp on America for decades. As predicted during the campaign, today's President could end up filling two or three vacancies over a two-term stretch (heaven forbid). Not that Souter's at all conservative... a bad pick by Bush 41.  Message to the reasonable "Originalist" members of the Court: Please stay there... and stay healthy...for a long time.
