RICE MANIA
And we're not talking Condi here. The latest mini-panic-that-could-get-ugly? Fears of a rice shortage. Even though America produces more than it needs and exports the excess, Wal-Mart and Costco report runs on rice, leading to limits on sales to would-be hoarders: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-rice24apr24,0,3320375.story
This reminds me of the time in the 1970s with NBC's Johnny Carson joked about a toilet paper shortage... which caused lots of viewers to run to the stores and overdose on Charmin. It's no surprise that people get moved to do crazy things if they're told something repeatedly. Busy folks have little time to get all the facts, and this is an age where we have 24/7 news and more information at our fingertips that at any time in history. It's as if we want to believe the worst, with too many of us who are already sick and nervous, due to a steady info-diet of negative news and those who (for whatver warped reason) appear to cheer on a recession. Time to sober up and get out of easy-panic mode.
