HECKLING CLINTON

I felt like a co-host on the old "Mystery Science Theater" on TV... adding creative heckling to Bill Clinton's remarks at the DNC in Denver tonight. (My wife loves the way I talk back to the television.) So many whoppers, so little time to cover them all.  I've realized a couple of major truths: The Democrats assume their rank and file have historical perspective that goes wayyyyy deep... back to about a week and a half ago... so they can say anything, make up anything, and no one cries foul! (Speaking of "foul speak" --- who on the DNC sent talking points to their people pushing for baseball analogies? Enough of the "hit the ball out of the park" stuff, please!)  Here's another revelation: I saw Michelle Obama on NBC tonight, talking about how hard it is for their kids when Daddy's away. I think anyone who believes in "family values" ought to vote against the Dem ticket... for the sake of the CHILDREN.

On the first night of the DNC convention, it was clear tensions ran high and there's no "unity" to the degree it's being hyped. But Mrs. Obama delivered a speech well, and Ted Kennedy moved the room to tears. (There were also crowd-tear-triggers in Michelle O's speech too, often at odd times in the message.) OK, fine. But after lofty speeches go back and read what was said and try to interpret what's really on the agenda. The Dems did show one bit of sharp judgement: Not letting Jimmy Carter need a microphone.

DEFLECTION STRATEGY

The New York Times says Barack Obama may announce his VP pick as early as tomorrow. Why not wait until the convention next week? Partly to irritate the Clintons, possibly, but more likely because people are buzzing about the news of the last 48 hours: Obama's vapid performance at Rick Warren's church event. (His empty response to the question about "when life begins" was especially awful.) Even some of his supporters are wondering if there's much "there" when "The One" isn't using a Teleprompter. So it makes sense that the World's #1 celebrity wants to distract Americans by announcing something "big". One name being mentioned for Obama's #2 spot: Senator Bayh from Indiana.  Well, if Obama continues in his gaffes and rambling, empty responses to even the most basic questions the ticket could be "Obama-BYE".  Hillary's gotta be loving this.
