GREAT MOMENTS IN MEDIA

Typical of the depth and perspective in many media reports, get a load of this report about Saddam's execution:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xgf80q7iIS8 "Assassinated?" (Thanks to Concerned Listener Stoo for finding this gem).

WHILE WE'RE WATCHING VIDEOS: Check this link for a reminder of what our incoming Speaker of the House, Madame Pelosi, is all about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46Tv5Yrfbz8&NR Enjoy the rest of the holiday season... it's going to be a long, cold, irritating January under these nutballs. Just wait until they start the endless tribunals. In their view, Bush is worse than the now-gone Saddam.

GERALD FORD, RIP

Tributes pour in as the days of mourning continue for President Ford. Isn't it amazing how the left decides to adore people with opposing views after they die? That happened when Ronald Reagan passed away, and it's happening now with Ford (example: Ted Kennedy's statements). Here's my friend Mike Reagan's take on the story: http://reagan.com/article.php?id=188

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

CNN. I've just been watching Anderson Cooper confirm the execution of Saddam. He's explaining how they'll soon have photos showing the death of the Butcher of Baghdad, but that CNN will give advance warning, not wanting to offend the TV audience. He said they'll have a network panel reviewing any images to make sure nothing is too graphic to be shown, not wanting to display anything "too gruesome". What a bunch of bunk. More evidence that they care most about our enemies. This is the same network that claimed it was "news" that had to be shown when they broadcast video showing insurgent snipers killing U.S. troops. They and other outlets have not had a problem showing disfigured, bloated bodies of everyday people killed in situations around the globe. Why the sensitivity about Hussein? Afraid to upset satellite viewers in the Middle East? Good grief. There's no reason to give Saddam any respect. He already had due process in court, something he never afforded his victims in Iraq. Message to CNN and other networks: Show what you have. Send a message the Iraqi people that Saddam is really dead and gone. Other tinhorn dictators will then have to take notice, too. Do it.

THE NUTS ON PARADE: Conspiracy junkies on the left...and some on the right... are claiming that Saddam was killed to shut him up; to keep him from spilling the beans about Bush, the Saudis... the whole works. What are they smoking?

THERE'S A SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL...

MEDIA FRENZY

They're going nuts over Ford's interview with Bob Woodward, where the former President was criticizing Bush's Iraq policy. So what? President Ford was no Reagan conservative. He was what the country needed post-Watergate, and he was often more "moderate" on issues, yes. That doesn't mean he was always right. I sure didn't like his getting out of Vietnam via appeasement mode. But I still respected him (see my item below), despite occasional points of disagreement. There are new questions, however: Why didn't he request an embargo of the comments until after Bush was gone... or at least until the administration was over? And why was Woodward so eager to release Ford's comments before the body was warm? Progress for Bob this time, though. At least this source gave him quotes while he was alive, and there's a recording of it all. Still not sure when/how he got the past gems from William Casey.

AMERICA MOURNS: The question of the day is whether James Brown draws more people than Ford. Or, for that matter, if the continuing flap between Rosie and Trump will get more pub. Wild card: A Saddam hanging over the weekend. Any predictions on who the leftie will be, first condemning the execution of the Butcher of Baghdad?

PRESIDENT GERALD FORD PASSES AWAY

He was the man who brought America together after Watergate, tackling White House challenges with a strong, Midwestern work ethic and sensibility. While denied a full-term by voters who were lulled into thinking Jimmy Carter would be an improvement (he certainly wasn't) and due to his pardoning of Richard Nixon (which spared the nation an endless circus), President Ford was a good and decent man. His administration was known for being open and honest. More info: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061227/ap_on_re_us/obit_ford_16
I first met him when I was 9, visiting Washington, DC in 1964 with my grandparents. Our local congressman (and later Presidential candidate) John B. Anderson introduced us to Ford in the Congressional dining room. That moment inspired me to be much more tuned in to politics throughout my life. He impressed me with his humility---the very embodiment of the attitude that you can grow up and work to be just about anything you set out to do, with God's help... that's what being an American is all about. In the 1980s, I was re-introduced to him by Bob Hope (yes, that Bob Hope) on a golf green at the Andy Williams Open golf event in San Diego. That was a moment that will go down in my personal radio history: An interview with Bob Hope suddenly merging into a "Hey, you know Jerry Ford, don't you Mark?" transition, followed by the two of them doing one-liners while I pinched myself. What a place to be, just doing my job! In 1996 I met President Ford again, this time when I emceed a Bob Dole event following one of his debates with Bill Clinton. In the photo below (taken by KGTV Channel 10 at that event), Ford has just asked me for advice about a person appearing on the program with us. (In the foreground you can also see Lorenzo Lamas and Bob Dole.) While his politics were sometimes more moderate than I would have liked, Gerald Ford was always a gracious, down-to-earth man, and one to whom America owes a debt of gratitude.

All that pent-up enthusiasm after losing some Christmas wars leads to this: http://newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/12/26/134132.shtml?s=us They're suing a Texas town for NOT renting to illegals.

SADDAM'S HOURGLASS: Running short on sand. His court-ordered hanging could happen at any time now. http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,1978780,00.html Some are calling for compassion. Of course that's something he never showed for innocent citizens and even some members of his own family.

BAD DAY FOR SADDAM

He loses the appeal case and the Iraqi court orders his execution within 30 days: www.breitbart.com/news/2006/12/26/D8M8LMV00.html
It's about time.

MEANWHILE, BACK IN CONGRESS: They're revving up for the new session under Pelosi & Company. And Keith Ellison says he'll take the oath of office with his hand on the Quran after all:
www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061225/NEWS99/61225002

AND THE POINT IS...?

The headlines say "U.S. deaths in Iraq exceed 9/11": http://apnews.myway.com/article/20061226/D8M8AVJG0.html
Sad news, yes. But what's the point? And what's with media picking "milestones" out of the air (or maybe somewhere more "personal"), then trumpeting the numbers like we're now supposed rethink everything we're doing in the War on Terrorism. This would be as stupid as saying early on in World War II, "Well, we're past the number killed at Pearl Harbor so let's wrap it up boys. Hitler, Tojo... we'll be out of here right away." The media elites pulled this kind of thing when the death toll reached 1,000... then 2,000 and so on. It's like they're running a macabre TV news telethon. And it's usually without perspective and context. What dangerous nonsense.

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Our best to you and yours from LarsonBlog.com! May this day bring you peace, hope and joy... and a chance to reflect on the meaning of the celebration. Charles Dickens wrote a wonderful book that isn't as well known as his most famous novels. "The Life of Our Lord" was prepared for his family members, and the existence of it was kept secret for many years after his death. Reading it will give you a fresh understanding of the birth of Christ. Here's the full book: http://www.jesus.org.uk/vault/library/dickens_life.pdf Have a blessed Christmas with your loved ones today!

OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH THEM

On this Christmas Eve, our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women who serve in our armed forces and fight for the cause of freedom around the world: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,238666,00.html We're also thankful for their loved ones here at home... the families who are so often America's unsung heroes.

CHRISTMAS EVE MEMORIES

You can't read Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and remain a hard-hearted Scrooge. Here's the whole thing: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/DicChri.html What a classic tale! I was never into Dickens until I visited London in 2001 and met his great-grandson, Cedric. He was quite the extension of his family heritage, and he made history come alive everyday. God bless him... and God bless us, every one. Merry Christmas!

IT'S ABOUT TIME

Sanctions for Iran: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,238512,00.html Happy holidays, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad!

NATIVITY FLAP: To those who demand equal treatment for "other religions" when a nativity scene is displayed, think about this: How would it fly in the media if Christians demanded their icons to be displayed during, say, Ramadan? The world's faiths have a right to their own observances without political correctness.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE... EVE!

Ah, what a special season! Yes, even the last-minute shopping. I'm starting tomorrow. In the interest of full disclosure, though, this year I did buy myself a pre-Christmas gift: A Lionel train for under the tree. I had train sets when I was a kid, but never a big one specifically made for the holiday. And I don't recall them costing about $350 (besides, I had to buy the passenger car accessories). So I have been behaving like a 7 year old (hey, it has a whistle and the locomotive smokes!). That's a good thing.

The time to worry is when we lose the little child inside of us. As time passes it takes a little more work to cultivate that inner tyke, but it's worth it and necessary. There's plenty of time every week to have to be "adult". So I sing along with my eclectic CD's in my sensibly-appointed fossil fuel-burning SUV, not caring about people who watch me and think I'm nuts. I go through withdrawal when the Christmas commercials on TV and radio come to a halt on 12/25. (It's been more enjoyable this year since many retailers have reverted to saying "Merry Christmas".) And I will have great fun doing "odd shopping", too, like getting hundreds of rounds of ammo for my adult sons (we all have Glock pistols and compete against each other at a local shooting range... now that's bonding). At our house, we will also reflect on our family's Swedish traditions. They're more meaningful this year after spending a few days last summer with my relatives outside of Stockholm. Lesson: Never lose your roots... stay connected.

Hey, this IS supposed to be a season of joy, celebrating the birth of Christ, the Savior of the world. And believe me, we need a Savior especially now, in this world. That's why it's so puzzling to me when people fight Christmas goodness and try to be anything but happy. One of the trends this year is hanging the evergreen upside down... or even black Christmas trees: http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=abNQfvk6bZPY Some people just love being contrarian. Go figure. Well... please try to have a very Merry Christmas anyway. Enjoy this "Christmas Eve-eve" day!

ILLEGALS GET WHAT?!?!?

Taxpayer-funded health care. It already happens through abuse of the system, but now Fabian Nunez wants health care for all, including illegal immigrants. And you and I will have to pay more so the plan can happen: www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/12/22/BAG5BN4EG21.DTL There had better be LOTS of debate on this loopy idea. Pray that the Governor isn't drawn into the messed up thinking on this issue.

NOW WE KNOW...

...who really beat the GOP in November. And Zawahri thinks he's in charge of the Democrats now: http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2006/12/al_qaeda_sends_.html

BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID: Charges are filed against U.S. Marines in the Haditha case: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061222/wl_afp/iraqusjusticemilitary_
It's getting scary now. Too many Americans refuse to see this story in perspective, assuming members of our armed forces are all trigger-happy and on-edge. They're not. It's WAR, and sometimes bad things happen to innocent people. We try to avoid it, but increasingly the courts have struck fear in the hearts of those who put their lives on the line for us every day (including cops). Too often the results are deadly... to our troops. In hostile situations there's no time to think about too many "what if's", especially wondering how an eager attorney might second-guess decisions later on. Heaven help us if we don't keep clear heads on this issue. Time will tell what really happened at Haditha. In the meantime, let's remember the 900,000+ men and women in our military who have served honorably in Afghanistan and Iraq in recent years... over 160,000 of them are doing so right now. Our Christmas prayers are with them and their families.

RAMSEY CLARK'S VIEW: I'll bet he has more compassion for saving Saddam's life than he does for the Marines involved in Haditha.

IN YOUR GUTS YOU KNOW HE'S NUTS

Ramsey Clark defends Saddam Hussein...again. Now he warns we'd better not encourage the execution of the Butcher of Baghdad: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/21/world/middleeast/21clark.html?ref=middleeast Here's a challenge: When's the last time Clark (or Jimmy Carter for that matter) really put some passion into defending America. I guess there's no energy left after being joined at the hip with many of the world's finest despots.

SEE "THE NATIVITY STORY"

Some critics claim New Line Cinema is encouraging Americans to stand up and fight the "war against Christmas" only for bottom line gain. So what? It's a film worth seeing... well done and moving. Besides, this is a great time to get a fresh view of the first Christmas. Here's an update on the Hollywood story: www.cnsnews.com/ViewCulture.asp?Page=/Culture/archive/200612/CUL20061221a.html

EVERYONE GETS AN "A"

We've arrived. Not only has America dumbed down education and allowed everyone to get a gold star, now TIME magazine can't decide on "Person of the Year" (the artist formerly known as "Man of the Year"). So, they've chosen EVERYONE... that is, "You". Everybody's a winner this year. We don't want to hurt the nation's self esteem, ya know. MEDIA MYTHS ON PARADE

Our friends at Media Research have compiled more evidence of this year's top Media Myths: www.businessandmedia.org/specialreports/2006/topmediamyths/No wonder Americans get all sick and nervous and moody, and too often tell pollsters that their world is out of control.
In Rather's day, anchors pretended that they weren't biased. Now (and especially since Election Day) they're in full-throttle blatant mode. Example? Take a look at Katie Couric. Any night.

DEMOCRATS WARMER TO TERRORISTS?

Sunday, December 10, 2006

CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT...

...but it's still a "war" and we're still fighting "terror". The UK is getting wobbly, no longer wanting to call it the "war on terror" so it doesn't bother people: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/politics/story/0,,1968668,00.html Good grief.

Makes you wonder who else is in crazy-mode out there. And this story takes place in my hometown of Rockford, Illinois... right in Middle America: http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/12/08/D8LSTJL80.html The Jihadists are busy using the web to recruit all sorts of potential terrorists. We were fortunate this time. While the story is partly amusing (stereo speakers in exchange for grenades?!?!) it should serve as our latest wake-up call. We're in a war... and the bad guys want to kill us.

JEANE KIRKPATRICK, R.I.P.: We need more dedicated, focused and courageous people like Ambassador Kirkpatrick. Her legacy stands out in stark contrast vs. the Appeasement Crowd these days: www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/013/ She was a guest on my show a few times, and always made more sense than most "experts". With Bolton leaving the United Nations, it's likely we won't see someone with her strength at the U.N. anytime soon.

WHAT THE REPORT SAYS... AND DOESN'T

More about the Iraq Study Group's recommendations: www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page=/Nation/archive/200612/NAT20061206d.html

THE REPORT HITS THE FAN

And already Dems are grumbling that there's no "magic bullet" to end the Iraq war: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061206/ts_nm/iraq_dc They (and their media buddies) are also frustrated that Bush might "dig in his heels" and get "stubborn" about the Iraq Study Group's recommendations, sticking to his own plan. Already some network gurus are twisting the report with their headlines. Tim Russert said this morning that "Iraq is a mess". No, the report said it is a "dire and grave situation" where things are coming apart. It's a frank assessment of the situation, but much of what the experts are analyzing isn't news. And some things the left expected aren't part of these tablets brought down by the political Moses: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,234667,00.html
Generalization doesn't help. Baghdad's a big problem, but a majority of provinces are still better off. And how long will it take before someone asks the question: "Haven't the Dems increased the problem by fueling the insurgency with their anti-American rhetoric over the past year or two?" The answer, of course, is "YES". There are many left-wing politicians who care only about a continuing crisis so they can hang it around Bush's neck for his legacy. And they care more about their political fortunes than freedom. In the meantime, Bush needs to demonstrate that he still knows how to lead. Time to stop caving in to the so-called grownups who are his Daddy's friends and do the right thing. If not, he risks becoming the Republican's Jimmy Carter.

BY POPULAR DEMAND

Here's the updated Parable of the "Ant and the Grasshopper" (as heard on our show Tuesday):

"The Ant & The Grasshopper"

"OLD VERSION":
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!*********************************************************************************
"MODERN VERSION":
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and dances and plays the summer away.Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving. CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.

America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green".

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome" Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share."

Finally, the EEOC drafts the "Economic Equity andAnti-Grasshopper Act," retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant,the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill "no pants" Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients.

The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishingup the last bits of the ant's food while the governmenthouse he is in, which just happens to be the ant'sold house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.
