KUDOS TO MR. PADRE

Congratulations to our good friend Tony Gwynn on his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame: http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7072242 OK, congrats to Cal Ripken, Jr. too, but he already gets way more national PR being an East Coast star (smile). Seriously, both gentlemen are a rare breed in baseball today, with amazing records and personal integrity. My oldest son Jeff and I spent the weekend here in Cooperstown, New York and attended several special events, thanks to Tony. One of the most amazing was at the Hall of Fame last night, at private reception (for members, family and invited guests) featuring the largest gathering of Hall of Famers (53) ever. Stars we had a chance to chat with (besides Tony and Cal) included Willy Mays, Ozzie Smith, Lou Brock, Dave Winfield and Reggie Jackson. Got some fun photos of Yogi Berra chowing down at the snack table, too. The Padres also know how to throw a great party, and they did early yesterday evening. Today's ceremony was quite moving... and sizzling hot. Worries of rain turned into "oops, no sunscreen" moans. I have a lovely, healthy radish glow tonight. The media photographers seemed to get really excited when John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston showed up (on Cal's side). They sat across the aisle from us (and eclipsed Richard Gere who was also in attendance). Yes, quite a surreal weekend. But one to savor forever.

TALKING DOWN THE MARKET

Is it just me, or do the national media seem extra gleeful about reporting a drop on Wall Street (never mind that the Dow's over 13,000!) and working hard to spook viewers about housing prices. No, the elite media don't get together in conspiratorial conference calls, they just think alike. These "Sons and Daughters of the '60s" believe Bush is Nixon, Iraq is Vietnam, Gonzales and the Justice Department is like Watergate... they're beside themselves with excitement. It's all so very obvious. And sickening.

WHERE'S AMERICA? I've noticed another trend lately, especially with Brian Williams. Listen for references to "the United States" or "America". You won't hear much of that at all. Usually there are only pointed references to "in this country" or "in this nation". The "this country" references seem to exist to put the USA on level with all other nations. And could it be that saying "America" in the news just smacks too much of... oh, what's the nasty word..... patriotism?

The NEW "San Diego 1700AM": Debuts with yours truly in the morning, live and local from 5 to 9AM, next Wednesday August 1st. Listen live on 1700AM in Southern California and everywhere on http://www.sandiego1700.com/ (website also launches Wednesday). In coming weeks, additional new programs will be added throughout station schedule. More info soon!

BAD GUYS GET BUSIER

Another blow to Senator John Edwards' claim that the "global war on terrorism" is just a "bumpersticker slogan"... authorities uncover suspicious incidents at airports including San Diego: http://www.examiner.com/a-844870~Airports_Warned_About_Terror_Dry_Runs.html

HALL OF FAME WEEK

Big celebrations through next weekend for our friend Tony Gwynn, "Mr. Padre", eight-time National League batting champion... and so much more. Most of all, he's a down-to-earth quality guy. Next Sunday Tony and Cal Ripken will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, a long anticipated and greatly deserved honor. I'm happy to say I'll be on hand for the events in Cooperstown and we'll have reports here on the Blog as well as on-air at XX Sports Radio (1090AM and 105.7FM in Southern California and on http://www.xxsportsradio.com/). Best wishes and congratulations, Tony!

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED TO ME...

... ON THE WAY TO CAPITOL HILL: I got an offer I couldn't refuse.

Visitors to LarsonBlog.com have read about what's gone on since I chose to leave KOGO in early June. Unhappy with the corporate-mandated switch from 12-3PM to 6 to 8PM, I opted out for a variety of reasons. I really enjoyed my time there (and the local people), but it wasn't what I signed up for. It became clear to me that deciding to leave KOGO was an opportunity to take some time to sort out all of the things on my to-do list. That meant assessing everything from whether I wanted to keep doing radio in its current out-of-town-corporate-controlled environment to expanding my own media services company and speakers agency (both have been doing increasingly well in recent years). I had also been considering running for Duncan Hunter's seat in Congress.

But as I've noted on my Blog, it's amazing to see what happens when you take a risk and step out into uncharted territory. Free agency is an wonderful thing, and people often reach out with opportunities that weren't envisioned initially. Enter John Lynch, CEO of Broadcast Company of the Americas (owner of XX Sports 1090 and 105.7 and Cash 1700 AM). John and I worked together as part of the KFMB team in the mid 1970s and were also part of the San Diego Radio Broadcasters Association, where I was President for eight years. I have always appreciated his love for local-controlled radio, creativity, energy and entrepeneurial spirit. So it got my attention when he began asking me lots of "what if's". In the last couple of weeks the meetings got rolling, I agreed to do a consulting project for the stations then...well.. it just all came together and made sense... and I signed a four year deal.

We agreed to build a new station: San Diego 1700AM. On August 1st, we'll change from Cash 1700AM and I'll begin a new live, local morning show from 5 to 9AM. San Diego-based Ray Lucia will continue to do 9AM to NOON. New local programming will soon be announced in the 12-3PM slot, and a variety of San Diego and Southern California shows will air 3-6PM, including longtime financial expert Bill Holland. Additional programs will be added in coming weeks, along with enhanced news and information. We're also creating a very strong partnership with XX Sports Radio, and cross-promoting beginning today. XX Sports reports will air on San Diego 1700, and among the things I'm looking forward to will be a reuniting of yours truly with Ted Leitner (ala our KFMB days) for a regular morning update. I will also do commentaries on XX Sports Radio starting in August. For me, getting back together with the station that brings you Padres baseball is extra special, reminding me of the many years when we were together at KFMB. After my 31 years in San Diego, it sure seems like a natural fit. We'll talk about all this as I'll be making several appearances today on XX Sports Radio 1090AM and 105.7FM. We'll also begin a new promotional campaign including during Padres radio broadcasts.

In addition to doing the weekday 5-9AM show, I'll also serve as Program Director for San Diego 1700. I will continue to operate Mark Larson Media Services, Inc and do guest-hosting on the Michael Reagan national talkshow (doing so again next Monday). John and I also agree in understanding the "call of community service". He knows there may be a point in the future where I decide to run for office and he's accepted that. Yes, it's been a VERY interesting few weeks "contemplating". I feel very blessed by this unexpected opportunity, and I'm thrilled to be partnering with the BCA team!

More updates coming soon here on the Blog... and thanks for your support.

MY MIND'S MADE UP...

...just finalizing a few things. As I've noted in previous LarsonBlog entries, after choosing to leave KOGO a month ago to consider my options, I was pleasantly surprised that other possibilities arose, too (In addition to what I knew I needed to consider). Today I made up my mind.. with just a few tidbits to iron out in the next couple of days. I'll post all the "new news" right here this Wednesday morning!

WHY THE SENATE MAKES ME CRAZY

There they go again... this time it's Webb vs. Graham: http://newsbusters.org/node/14120
Both major parties are now demonstrating that too many of their members care mostly about their own power, not victory. That's dangerous.

AL JAZEERA'S SUMMER TV SEASON

First Zawahri and now it's Osama's latest video:
www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/07/14/bin.laden.video/ For the triple play, time for "Azzam the American" (the traitor from Hemet, CA) to show up with his latest, too (my bet: next week). The big question is: Are they full of bluster or does all of this signal a new summer Homeland attack by a re-inspired Al Qaeda? One thing's certain: Boneheads in Congress who are setting withdrawal dates and whining about how the war is going are sending a loud and clear message to Osama & Company: Go ahead, give it a shot. We're weak. Lord help us.. and help politicians think more about the reality of the continuing war on terrorism instead of trying any dangerous angle to increase their own power.

SATURDAY PREVIEW

There will be a memorial service today (Saturday July 14) to remember Randy, a man who some called "the Elephant Man". He was often seen around El Cajon, California at the store, post office, etc. Many people shunned him, or acted like he wasn't "there". One day a couple of years ago I decided to say hello... expecting him to be nasty, talk about hating God, you name it. I wouldn't have blamed him, really. But I was very surprised. He was warm, sweet and very inspiring. He also talked about his faith in God. Wow, what a testimony, considering the physical burden he lived with all his life. I received word that Randy passed away a few days ago. A listener who heard me talk about Randy on the air thought I'd like to know. Other friends of Randy made this short video about him in late 2006: http://www.current.tv/watch/13663092 Thank God for his life, his courage and the way he touched many people, including me. He will be greatly missed.

MORE THAN A GUT FEELING?

What else does Chertoff know? Is a terrorist attack more likely, sooner not later? Some experts think the latest Zawahri video might contain signals: http://blogs.abcnews.com/theblotter/2007/07/signal-to-attac.html (Memo to Sen. John Edwards: Sorry to spoil your weekend, but this is more evidence that the War on Terrorism is more than just a bumpersticker slogan.)

DENNIS KUCINICH UNPLUGGED

He's upset over reports that the major Democrat candidate don't want the Man from Pluto in upcoming debates: http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewPolitics.asp?Page=/Politics/archive/200707/POL20070713b.html This will outrage the Klingons.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Scroll down for an update (after "Vacation" news)...

WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION

Among the highlights: My trip to Kennedy Space Center in Florida (early June) for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation dinner, FarthestReaches.com autograph show and related activities. I was honored to emcee some of those special events. Most of all, it was my "roots tour" in tribute to my good friend Wally Schirra, one of the Original Seven astronauts. He passed away in May of this year, and the trip was my chance to visit all of his launch sites and enjoy the company of many of his friends and fellow heroes. It was a very inspiring, even life-changing weekend. Hey, I was so moved to take new courageous risks (as these guys did) that I came back and quit my radio job! I think Alan Bean pushed me over the edge (it's all good).

At the Astronaut Foundation Dinner in Florida with Scott Carpenter. Only he and John Glenn remain as living members of the Original Seven. We "Friends of Wally" Schirra wore Hawaiian shirts in tribute to our buddy.

Enjoying a laugh with the legendary Gene Kranz of "Failure Is Not An Option" fame (Apollo 13).

Looking oh-so-fabulous (!!!) with astronaut Dick Gordon (Gemini 11 and Apollo 12) at Kennedy Space Center''s Saturn V paviilion (with apologies to the lovely Linda Gordon).

Enjoying a laugh with Walt Cunningham (Apollo 7) and Rusty Schweikart (Apollo 9). Note: The Apollo 9 command module is currently on display at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, where I serve on the Board of Directors.

With Dee O'Hara, famed nurse to the astronauts, and General Tom Stafford (Gemini and Apollo).

With Tracy Kornfeld, good friend and designer of many of the astronaut websites (including www.wallyschirra.com)

Our best buddy, "Uncle Bill" Dana, aka "Jose Jimenez" the eighth Mercury astronaut. A wonderful talent and sweet friend.

With the legendary Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and 13) at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, June 9, 2007.

One of the only remaining enormous Saturn V rockets (Kennedy Space Center). This year's Astronaut Foundation dinner was held in this amazing facility, under the Saturn.

With Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon.

On the historic Apollo launch pad where Wally Schirra, Don Eisele and Walter Cunningham lifted off on the successful Apollo 7 mission. That was the first flight after the shocking Apollo One fire that killed astronauts Grissom, Chafee and White.

WHAT'S NEXT
Thanks for checking in re: the latest on yours truly. I'm getting emails everyday (mark@marklarson.com) like one from Concerned Listener Paul who asks "Enough already, when will we be able to hear you on the air again?". Of course my voice is heard on over 2,500 outlets each week, and when I guest-host on Mike Reagan's national show that's another 200+ stations. But as for a regular radio show, web updates, on-line video... all those questions (and queries like Paul's), here's the scoop: I will have some exciting news for you on or before Wednesday July 18th. As I've noted in previous LarsonBlog updates, once I chose to leave KOGO I've had several very interesting opportunities come up... so much more to consider, as well as the continuing issue of a possible run for Congress (I know, most people like to run from Congress). Anyway, now through this weekend I'm making some final decisions in several areas. Stay tuned... and more info coming soon! Really.

A LITTLE TOO COZY?

Gee, aren't you glad that politicians are such experts on immigration? I'm sure they'll take care of everything before it's too late.
Time for concern
The Navy is sending a third carrier to the Middle East, sending a clear message to Iran:

The Enterprise joins other carriers including San Diego-based USS Nimitz. Let's hope Ahmadinejad is paying attention and behaves himself.

SALUTING THE HEROES
Saturday night I had the honor of emceeing the Fairbanks Republican Women Federated "Heroes Round-up" at San Diego's Del Mar Fairgrounds. It was a wonderful event, made most memorable by a salute to several real-life heroes from World War II, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan: James Kunkle, Neil Black, Bob Krone, Robert Modrzejewski, Scott Montoya and Tom Richards. We also saluted legendary actor Hugh O'Brian (of "Wyatt Earp" fame). Hugh has had a very successul public service organization, "HOBY" (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership) for nearly 50 years, greatly impacting individuals and communities across the USA. It was a very inspiring evening, and a great reminder of what America is all about. (Hugh O'Brian's story is also featured in Barbara Metzler's latest book, "Passionaries"... read more about it at www.passionaries.com)

Why is the GOP base so upset with the President? It might not be what you think. Byron York assesses why "it's over":www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/06/AR2007070602003.html

SNOOZAPALOOZA:
I tried watching some of Al Gore's Live Earth extravaganza but...wow. How tedious! Oh sure, there was the occasional creative production piece or interesting music, but the continuous Gore-basm of eco-lecturing (and the assumption that all he and Global Warmers say is Gospel) got to be stupefyingly numbing. And realllllllly.... who thinks the movement of pledge-takers will make any difference? It was clear that many audience members had other agendas... and little understanding of the facts. It was the movement that moved them more than anything.
Let's keep score on actual results and compare notes in a few months. It's all really about Al.

SO THE PROBLEM IS...?

Today's New York Times has a lead story about how more illegal immigrants are hurrying up the process of becoming legal citizens. Of course the story is presented as if somehow it's America's fault... the people had no choice in the wake of the immigration bill's defeat in the Senate. Huh? Three cheers for assimilation!

DON'T COUNT ME OUT: Of either a future political race or new media exposure. One of the things I'm finding I miss most in my "mulling all options" phase of life now is a daily outlet: A radio talk show. Sure, the Blog helps, but plenty more to say every day (BTW: Going to be adding video webcam updates on the Blog sometime soon.) As I've noted many times, I loved the 12-3PM spot on KOGO, but the switch to a 6-8PM show wasn't working for me... and it felt so far removed from everything else that I enjoyed at the station. But for pundits who keep saying "Larson's hung up his radio microphone", as if it's "forever" ----well, that's just not true. Just the KOGO mic... stay tuned.

GET READY

Events in London and Scotland remind us that the War on Terrorism is not just a "bumper sticker slogan" (sorry, Senator Edwards). Now my friend David Ignatius writes about how America might react to a "next attack" on the American homeland. It's a wake up call:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

IN OR OUT?

OK, so I feel like a human pinball machine....new ideas and possibilities bouncing all over the place! When I left KOGO in June I said I wanted take time to consider all things, including getting some clarity on a possible race for Congress. In the meantime, all sorts of intriguing ideas and projects have come up... ironically all since I stuck a "date" on my decision process (by July 4)there's been more to consider. But it's a nice thing (and quite humbling) to hear from people with suggestions, new offers and even campaign advice.

All of this has caused me to come to a decision of ---"no decision" (yet) on Congress. Not ruling it out, or in. The filing deadline is a long way off (early 2008). It's also clear that I need additional time to factor in fascinating new developments for my company, Mark Larson Media Services, Inc. In the last couple of days I've taken on a consulting project for a local media company. My SpeakersGroup.net been exploding with lots of new business, as has my commercial work with longtime clients such as El Cajon Ford. And guest-hosting on the Michael Reagan national talkshow. There's no shortage of things to do right now.

It's all good: I thank God for the opportunity to consider everything...and not miss anything along the way. I think He understands if I hold off a while longer on the Congressional adventure... Check in often --- updates "as they become available"!

Happy Independence Day!

NEW TWISTS...

...in my "mulling over" new opportunities. I've said I'll have an announcement re: possible run for Congress by July 4th. Well, a couple of new twists have happened, all good. Still hoping to have some sort of decision in the next two days. I'll post it here.
